Fall cleanse for lymph

A 3-day cleanse to support lymphatic decongestion and usher in the season of the Metal element.

The transition from summer to late summer and finally, Fall is one of challenge and change. The ancients believed that spring and fall represent the greatest challenge in terms of adaptability, whether physically or mentally.

We should not judge ourselves if we have trouble with allergies, pain, or digestion at this time of year. Simply take whatever measures necessary to invoke greater balance and stability.

To that end, I like to suggest a 3-day cleanse with any seasonal change. The following cleanse is a propos for late September and early October to help your system adjust and boost immunity against seasonal allergies.

Blueberry-Avocado Cleanse

1 cup fresh blueberries

1/2 avocado (save the other half for a salad!!)

Handful of cilantro

1 cup of water

1 cup of pomegranate juice

Squeeze of lemon

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Use a high setting to break down the cilantro into digestible pieces.

To Use:

Drink 1/2 to 1 cup of juice 3 times per day. If you have a lot of sinus congestion, add powdered vitamin C or bromelain powder to the mixture. You can add these even if you do not have this problem to boost immunity!

Save unused mixture in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can double this recipe for a 2-3 day portion.

Cleansing Guidelines:

While using the juice as a cleanse it is also advisable to eat one meal per day. Choose a time most convenient for you and one that you can relax and actually sit down to enjoy it. Eat only vegetables, fish, tofu and/or rice. Avoid meat, dairy, sugar, and wheat.

Cilantro: Adding a green food is paramount to making this a real cleanse. Cilantro can pull metals out of the bloodstream and is very detoxifying. Cilantro also reduces blood sugar and contains antimicrobials to protect against infection.

Blueberries: My favorite antioxidant, blueberries offer protection to the heart, kidneys, and brain. They slow aging and taste great too!

Avocado: Adding some protein and fat to this cleanse will help to protect blood sugar levels, and prevent unwanted side effects of fasting. Especially for seniors, it is important to use caution when doing a cleanse. And avocado is good for anyone at any age as the unsaturated fats in avocados help reduce stress and calm nerves.

Pomegranate juice: I have included this wonderful ingredient, so heavenly this time of year. Pomegranate juice adds another big boost of antioxidants to this juice. It is also considered astringent in nature according to Asian medicine. Astringent or sour foods contract the tissues and canals of the body, helping to firm up weakened tissues and also prevents excessive discharge.  Eating more astringent foods is helpful during the Fall season as the energy is more consolidating and contracting.

Lemon: Lemons assist peristalsis (movement of wastes through intestines) and support the liver detoxification pathways.

Final Notes:

Feel free to modify this cleanse with substitutions or additions as desired. If you find that you need a higher intake of protein, you can add more avocado or another protein source, like almond butter. If you prefer other juices to pomegranate, use those by all means. Just try to avoid any foods or juices with added sugar.
